Stair Quality
The quality of the stairs we install is a major factor when considering your project. There are 2 basic levels of quality for timber stairs:
MDF / plywood or Solid timber
MDF & plywood construction
These are the cheapest stairs and this is reflected in the materials used in construction.
Usually, the treads are made from 22mm MDF, the risers are 9mm plywood & the strings are 25mm.
All these materials are perfectly adequate for a stair case, however we do not recommend this type of stairs and have stopped installing these.
We have found that in the long term that they are susceptible to loose & squeaky joints and are easily damaged. Also, they are not aesthetically pleasing.
Note of caution: When comparing quotes from other businesses make sure the materials being used compare to our own quote, we are happy to advise on this.
Solid wood construction
The quality of a solid wood stair case that we install is far superior to a MDF stair case. All of our stairs are bespoke and made to order.
Each stair case can be made from a variety of woods, from pine, oak, sapele, walnut, ash & white primed, or we can mix & match as well.
As a minimum we recommend 32 mm treads, 32mm strings and 18mm risers, (we can also provide 42 mm treads & strings if required). All of the joints are glued and screwed together creating a very solid and long lasting stair case.
Of course the finish is also something to consider, and with that in mind we also offer an oiling service to enhance the natural beauty of the wood.
